Phil teaches pupils in the comfort of their own homes. Working in pupils’ own homes has helped Phil to create the relaxed, fun environment that he has come to be known for. Phil teaches adults and children; however when teaching children, visiting the pupil's home has also helped Phil to maintain a good relationship with parents.
Phil maintains that people tend to learn more if they like their teacher. For this reason, one of Phil’s central aims is to be highly approachable and patient with pupils.
Phil has spent the last 14 years carefully developing and fine-tuning his teaching strategies. Phil uses clearly formulated goals in order to monitor the effectiveness of his teaching techniques. Making reference to clearly defined goals enables Phil to ensure that he is now able to achieve his aims in a fraction of the time it took him when he began teaching 14 years ago.
Phil teaches all styles of music, including Classical and Pop. Phil teaches reading music as well as teaching pupils how to build piano accompaniments for themselves. Phil has found that many pupils who are taught to read music do not actually learn to read properly, but simply memorise their pieces over time. Phil has therefore gone to great lengths to develop teaching strategies that ensure pupils who wish to read music are actually learning to read and not simply memorising pieces.
Phil has found that only around a third of pupils possess strong natural musical gifting. Working with pupils who struggle to learn musical skills can be a challenge. However, Phil has always maintained that the true test of a good teacher is whether or not she is able to teach the least.
The children learn music they love, and have progressed quickly, building their confidence all the time.
His approach is encouraging and constructive, but disciplined, which has created a great environment for our daughter to develop her musical abilities.
